Peter Koff MW and Company Santa Cruz Mountains Meritage 2019.

Pedigree:
This wine is a product of a blending exercise conducted at a premium quality winery in California's Santa Cruz Mountains AVA. The winery is surrounded by some of Californias's most famous wineries, Ridge being one of them. The winery location is breathtaking with gorgeous views over San Francisco Bay. The source of the grapes is all estate fruit from the successful 2019 vintage. Peter has been acquainted with the winery for two decades as is well aware of the quality, style and longevity of the wines. The world was reeling with the shock of the pandemic, restaurants were closed or very restricted and people were afraid of unnecessary mingling. While the winery has no trouble selling all its wine, we offered the opportunity of a guaranteed sale at pretty much regular prices. The final blend is made up of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Five different lots were incorporated into the final blend from a total palette of seven lots. The wine was blended and racked back into the barrels for some further aging.

Label: The label is from an original drawing. The artist is one of the most famous cartoonists in Korea.

Winemaking: The winery handles the fruit gently to capture the energy and freshness of this mountain terroir. We selected the lots, that in our opinion, would stay true to terroir even with our imprimatur. We prize mountain fruit for its balance and racy lines, its complex and gentle progression across the palate. The wine is taut without being lean, in a word, a wine of "breeding."

Tasting Notes:
Color: Dark ruby, garnet robe, showing its youth.
Nose: The nose opens with cinnamon spice, and black and red berries, overlain with chocolate and mocha.
Palate: The characteristics on the nose carry forward into the wine. There is a sweetness of polished fruit on entry. The sensations envelop the palate snugly, building gently to a mouthfilling, sit-up-and-take-notice peacock tail. The mountain minerality is there, along with integrated acid and firm but fine grained tannins. The finish is long and begs the next sip. The wine is approachable now but will repay cellaring for at least 5 years.
Serving Temperature: 65° F - 69° F

Food Pairing:
Pair with vine grilled medium-rare meats and grilled vegetables. Don't forget the Portabella mushrooms!. Still have some left in your glass? Ripe Brie or Camembert will delight the end of your meal.
